Challenge
Build a Web site that motivates 9-12 year olds to explore nature in their own backyards and neighborhoods.
Forum One Solution
Forum One Communications created the concept for Backyard Jungle, a sophisticated, free, kid-safe online community. We then implemented it with backing from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and, after two years of successful operation, partnered with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) under a licensing agreement to make it part of the PBS Kids! Web sites.
Backyard Jungle provides 9-12 year old kids with interactive and collaborative online tools to motivate them to explore nature in their own backyards. Kids can easily create, catalogue and share their own backyards and discoveries, loading photos, drawings, and descriptions about the natural surrondings where they live. The site boasts nearly 50,000 entries, including over 15,000 photographs and drawings, made by kids around the world.
To develop Backyard Jungle, Forum One Communications researched the interests and needs of this unique target audience of 9-12 year olds. We then developed the site using our open-source online community and collaboration tools, and continue to own and operate the site under license to PBS.
